Merit Health Biloxi Elevates Senior Care with Only Geriatric Accredited Emergency Department on the Mississippi Gulf Coast
3/18/2024
Merit Health Biloxi proudly announces they are now accredited by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation Program (GEDA). Attaining this accreditation reinforces the commitment to personalized and comprehensive healthcare. Recognizing that "one size ED doesn’t fit all," Merit Health Biloxi's Geriatric Accredited ED is designed to meet the unique needs of the senior population.
The ED healthcare team at Merit Health Biloxi has received additional training to recognize often misdiagnosed, underlying illnesses. This supports a heightened ability to identify and address complex social and physical challenges unique to seniors.
Merit Health Biloxi's ED boasts specially renovated areas with interior designs catering to the needs of the senior population. This includes accommodations for mobility aids and other population-specific needs that facilitate a comfortable and supportive environment.
Interim CEO Dwayne Blaylock says, "This new accreditation is a testament to Merit Health Biloxi's dedication to personalized and compassionate care. We understand the unique needs of our senior community, and this accreditation reflects our commitment to meeting those needs head-on. It's about more than healthcare; it's about demonstrating our existing desire to provide an environment where our seniors feel seen, heard, and well cared for."
In addition to being the only hospital on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with this accreditation, Merit Health Biloxi proudly offers an in-house geriatric behavioral health unit enabling additional treatment options without the need for patient transfers. This supports a seamless continuum of care for seniors who need behavioral health treatment, keeping them close to home.
