BILOXI, Miss. (June 14, 2022)—Understanding the difficulty that accompanies caring for family members with behavioral health issues, Merit Health Biloxi is now offering a free support group for adult children, caregivers and other family members who would like to gain insight from the challenges and successes of others facing similar experiences.
For adult children, caregivers and other family members, the day-to-day struggles of looking after a loved one with behavioral health issues such as Alzheimer’s, dementia or other diseases can be overwhelming. Key challenges include finding supervision when they need a break, adjusting to lifestyle changes to provide a safe home environment, and having emotional support for the inevitable burnout and mental toll that comes from watching the visible decline of a loved one.
“Behavioral health, which includes both mental and physical health, is important at all stages of life,” says Sarah Lowery, LLMSW, and leader of the support group. “By holding a free support group for caregivers, it equips them with the knowledge and encouragement they need to go home and care for their elderly family members facing behavioral health challenges.”
The behavioral health caregiver support group is held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Nancy Harville Room, which is inside the cafeteria of the hospital, located at 150 Reynoir St. Biloxi, MS 39530.
The support group is run by employees of the hospital who work in Senior Care at Biloxi, a 12-bed unit providing private rooms with a warm and supportive atmosphere for patients seeking high-quality behavioral health services that include a medical assessment, a psychiatric evaluation, group and activity therapies, medication management, as well as education and support to both the patients themselves and the families who care for them.
For more information about the support group, and to RSVP, call (228) 436-1470 or visit the event page.
